Why You Should Consider an Education in Law

Why You Should Consider an Education in Law
Posted By: Rayanne Morriss on July 20, 2020

It is no easy feat to get a law degree. As one of the oldest academic professions in the world, obtaining this degree requires a high level of intelligence, self-motivation, and accountability. While it takes a lot of hard work to get there, you will not regret this academic pursuit once you see all of the benefits that the degree provides its graduates. Here are five of the best reasons why you should consider an education in law.

Versatile Degree

There is no graduate-level degree quite as versatile as a law degree. Many people mistakenly believe that you have to practice law once you earn this degree. The truth is that you can enter a multitude of professions once you have a law degree in hand. Individuals who earn a law degree are attractive candidates for jobs in politics, media, academia, social work, and more. In addition, it is easy to combine your law degree with your undergraduate work to create a desirable set of skills that apply to various career choices and industries. For example, many individuals attend law school after earning a business degree so that they can practice corporate law. Studying law can take you nearly anywhere in life that you want to go.

Financial Stability

One of the primary reasons that many people decide to pursue a career in law is because of the immense financial stability that it provides. You should not be ashamed about wanting to make a comfortable life for you and your family. This professional achievement will put you on the path to earning a nice salary and all of the perks that come with this respected degree. Although it takes hard work and dedication to get there, you will not regret putting in the time once you achieve all of your financial goals.

Intellectually Challenging

Regardless of where you choose to study the law, the simple process of obtaining this degree will prove to be intellectually challenging in a positive way. Law students learn how to master critical thinking while also learning valuable reasoning and analytical skills.

No matter where your future career path takes you, learning these skills will provide you with the intellectual fortitude to be successful in anything that you choose. The high standards and curriculum set by law schools also provide you with the opportunity to master communication skills, both written and verbally. These skills will be an advantage in any career trajectory.

Ability to Make a Difference

Many people enter the field of law because of an innate desire to make a difference in their community and in the world around them. It is challenging to learn the ins and outs of the legal system. However, once you acquaint yourself with these rules and regulations, you will put yourself in a better position to improve the deficiencies that you see in the system. For example, an orange county lawyer states that he “has dedicated his entire legal career to protecting the rights of injured victims and helping them get the maximum compensation possible for their injuries.” Learning more about law will give you the legal education and qualifications to be a person who is equipped to make significant and lasting change in this world.

Empowering Experience

Going through law school and leaving with your degree in hand is an empowering experience. Not only will you graduate knowing that you have been subject to intense academic requirements, the intangibles that come with earning this degree will give you the confidence that you need to tackle what lies ahead. During your time in law school, you will likely work with other students in small groups while participating in debates and lively discussions. Although this may seem intimidating at first, you will soon see that it provides an intense empowering learning opportunity with practical applications in the real world. This type of learning environment naturally nurtures high levels of self-esteem and confidence. You simply cannot put a price on the soft skills that you will get as you work your way through law school.

By getting a law degree, you will join the ranks of respected professionals throughout history such as Nelson Mandela, John Grisham, and Abraham Lincoln. That is not bad company to keep.
