HBCU Homecomings Moving to The Spring of 2021?
Posted By: Will Moss on July 21, 2020

With all of the cancellations of fall sports from HBCUs and HBCU conferences like the SWAC, the MEAC and the SIAC, due to COVID-19, people all around the country that are graduates from HBCUs are really upset that they will not be able to participate in an HBCU homecoming in Fall of 2020.

That got me to thinking that what if the HBCUs were to think outside of the box and consider moving their homecoming schedule to the spring of 2021. Maybe at that point in time there will be a vaccine for the coronavirus and COVID-19. And if that is the case then Maybe the runway would be cleared for takeoff! I would propose that the HBCUs consider a Plan B for their homecoming festivities that would allow HBCU alumni and graduates from all over the country to reconvene on their campus of choice for homecoming.

A lot of people consider Howard university's homecoming to be one of the best homecoming celebrations in all of the land. And others would argue that schools in the South such as Florida A&M University would be the destination of choice. But I think we all can agree that our favorite homecoming is the homecoming at the school that we graduated from because of all the connections that we made while we stayed on campus.
I would love to go back to an HBCU homecoming at my school Hampton University.

And with it being in the spring, even if it is the late spring ,maybe a homecoming celebration coupled with a graduation celebration could be the ultimate experience for students and alumni from HBCU universities.

This would also allow the HBCUs to partner with different hiring organizations to sponsor different activities on campus during the "Homecoming Celebration" coupled with graduation such that graduates would have the opportunity to land a job after graduation. Returning alumni could benefit from the networking as well, as most companies hiring are after that experienced talent as well!

So, I write this article in an attempt to get us to thinking outside of the box as HBCU supporters and graduates all over the country, we love our HBCUs! Wouldn't it be great if our schools thought outside of the box just like the founders of our colleges thought outside of the box when African Americans and Native Americans could not attend predominantly white institutions and they started these HBCU?

As an action item, if you have communication with the alumni affairs office at your school or you are in touch with leadership at the HBCU you attended maybe approached the conversation around a spring homecoming and get their thoughts because we are in this together and everyone knows the millions of dollars that are produced at these HBCU Homecomings, so why stop that just because we had to cancel Fall sports?
