Want to Become a Truck Driver? A Guide on How to Start

Want to Become a Truck Driver? A Guide on How to Start
Posted By: Dixie Somers on December 01, 2020

Truck driving is among the most promising careers in today’s employment history. It can be a rewarding career if you have the passion. However, you need to understand the processes involved in becoming a truck driver. Here is a guide to help you start the journey to your trucking career.

Research the Field

First, you need to understand how the industry operates. Find out the salary range of various CDL truck driver positions and also based on what you’re interested in doing. Note that salaries vary based on various factors such as level of experience, type of trucking job, and the company you work for.

Understand the Industry Pros and Cons

The truck driving career comes with both pros and cons. Understand both sides and determine whether you’d like to go for it or not. One benefit is that the driving course takes a shorter time. On the flip side, the job can be very demanding. You can work for over 12 hours a day, and it’s also a risky career, especially when you carry hazardous products.

Talk to Experienced Drivers

If you can identify drivers established in the field, you can talk to them and get useful information that can help you weigh the options.

Ask different drivers about their experience in the industry and open up about your interest in the field.

Study the Truck Drivers Manual

The commercial manual has a lot of information that will help you learn more. Get a copy of the CDL manual from the nearest DMV office. You can also check the website for relevant information. The manual gives you details of how to obtain your commercial driver’s license and safety laws.

Check if You Meet the Minimum Requirements

If you want to become a truck driver, you should be above 21 years. You must also be eligible to work in the state and the country. You also need a clean driving history. There are fewer chances to qualify as a truck driver if you have a reckless driving track record.

Go for Truck Driving Training

Search for reputable truck driving schools around your area and sign up for driving lessons. Some good schools will allow you to study both classroom and practical driving lessons. Remember, the fees vary depending on the different programs.

Take the CDL Exam

Once you pass the driving school, you’ll need to pass the CDL exam, both written and road tests. After that, you need to take the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration exam and ensure that you pass before you proceed.

Once you pass the exam, proceed to check for job placement opportunities. Identify truck driving companies that have been in existence for some time and express your interest in job opportunities. Start with entry-level positions that fit your qualifications as you grow in your career.
