How to Make Moving More Simple in College

How to Make Moving More Simple in College

Moving is an ideal time to get rid of what doesn't work and pare down your belongings to only what you need and no more. This process can also make you some money if you have the time to sell things yourself. Finally, you can focus on the activities that give you the most satisfaction.

Develop a Scale for What to Keep

As you sort through each room, simply ask yourself, "Would I stop what I'm doing right now and order this online if I didn't already own it?" Would I buy this today? The question can actually save you a lot of packing materials.

Supplies

Look around your area for paper-intensive businesses like law offices and accounting firms. Call them up and let them know you're looking for boxes and ask if they could put some aside for you. Paper boxes are a great moving tool because

  • they're generally the same size

  • they come with a lid

  • they're fairly durable and easy to tape up if needed

Unless you're packing up precious artwork, skip boxing up the linen cabinet and use it to wrap up fragile items. Get a good taping gun and keep an eye on it; tape is prone to getting lost in the mess. Finally, get a piece of yarn long enough to loop around your neck and hook a permanent marker over it. When you fill and tape a box, label it on the top and two sides for easy locating.

Hire a Mover for the Big Pieces

Don't move a piano on your own. Pay someone to haul the refrigerator, the fragile glass sculpture, your washer dryer and your antique bureau. From motorcycle shipping to boat hauling, be ready to shell out the cash to get these projects done right.

Not only may you be surprised at a lower price than you feared, but professionals with the right gear will be less likely to break your favorite things.

Clothing

If you have a moving date, selling the clothing you no longer need can be done in a variety of ways. However, if you plan to sell individual pieces, remember that you have to maintain the inventory and ship things out on platforms like Poshmark. You'll make less on packaged product shipments like ThredUp, but things will be out of the house more quickly. If you can find a consignment store that offers a fair price, box everything up that you don't want and take it over there.

As you go through your clothes, give everything the FLAG test:

  • Does it FIT? Right now, can you button it and breathe?

  • Do you LIKE it? Does it make you smile to pull this garment out of the closet?

  • Is it ACCESSIBLE? If you never go to the dry cleaners, wool is a waste. If you never iron, cotton is just a crumpled mess

  • Does it GO with at least two things you already own and wear?

If it can't pass all four tests, pass it on. Donate or sell it and move it out of the house quickly. You will move into your new home with a wardrobe of garments that you can rely on.

Get Rid of Duplicates

Adult cooks around the world have a favorite wooden spoon. Open up the drawers in your kitchen and grab your go-to tools. Put these in the box marked "Kitchen". If there are two adults in the house that cook, make sure everyone gets the chance to grab their favorite gear before you seal the box and get serious about giving things away.

Duplicate items that you have to move so you can grab your favorite bowl, spoon, charging cord or whatever are a waste of time, fuel and energy. Extra kitchen gear can be a great gift when given to a family shelter or another charitable organization. That box or bin of extra cables that you have collected and hung onto even though the gadget died long ago can be recycled.

Conclusion

For every box that you pack, try to give away, sell or discard two boxes worth of stuff. Unless you are a serious minimalist, moving is the chance to turn your new space into exactly what you want.
