THE SEARCH

The Bioindustrial Manufacturing and Design Ecosystem (BioMADE) welcomes applications and nominations for the Founding Chief Financial & Operations Officer (CFOO). The CFOO will serve on the BioMADE senior management team, providing strategic direction and ensuring the vision is supported by operational resources. The CFOO is responsible for developing and executing a strategy for the smooth and effective administration of the institute, while working to develop BioMADE’s vision, goals, and growth strategies.

Established with an $87 million grant from the Department of Defense (DoD), BioMADE is working to build a sustainable, domestic end-to-end bioindustrial manufacturing ecosystem that will enable domestic bioindustrial manufacturing at all scales, develop technologies to enhance U.S. bioindustrial competitiveness, de-risk investment in relevant infrastructure, and expand the biomanufacturing workforce to realize the economic promise of industrial biotechnology. In support of this work, the funding from the DoD will be combined with over $187 million in non-federal, cost sharing monies from 31 companies, 57 colleges and universities, six nonprofits, and two venture capital groups across 31 states.

BioMADE is part of Manufacturing USA’s network of 16 specialized institutes. Each institute focuses on a different advanced manufacturing technology area but works in concert to accelerate U.S. advanced manufacturing as a whole, by specifically addressing a challenge the U.S. faces—the translation of technical innovation into large-scale U.S. production.

Reporting to Douglas Friedman, CEO of BioMADE, the CFOO will be responsible for the fiduciary management of the corporation and will oversee all business services operational, and compliance activities ensuring BioMADE resources are managed efficiently, effectively and responsibly in support of the mission. The CFOO will ensure that all operations are compliant with agency, federal, and non-profit regulations and requirements in BioMADE’s complex funding and organizational model. The CFOO will also oversee the programmatic grantmaking award and oversight process, and intricate cost share tracking and reporting; and will develop structural oversight to ensure reporting requirements and milestones are met. The CFOO must be able to meet ITAR and security clearance requirements as the scope of the work includes access to information and technology that may be regulated under the ITAR and/or is classified. The CFOO must have excellent leadership skills, business acumen, and the ability to effectively manage, lead, and supervise a multidisciplinary team. They must excel at strategic thinking, be open to new perspectives and better ways to do things, be creative and visionary, and manage innovation well.
