Mechanical Operations Technician

Johnson & Johnson, Robotics and Digital (RAD) Solutions is recruiting for a Mechanical Operations Technician located in Santa Clara, CA. Robotics and Digital Solutions is a growing group within Johnson & Johnson crafting the future of medical intervention. Our new future will involve machine learning, medical robotics, instrumentation, sophisticated visualization, and data analytics. Our platform technology targets to improve patient outcomes, enhance access and integration for surgeons and staff, and better hospital efficiency.

Mission:

The Mechanical Operations Technician will lead or support a small team working with other members of the Research & Development hardware integration repair team to support the troubleshooting, root cause analysis and drive issue resolution for complex mechanisms, structural but lightweight assemblies, motor driven actuators, and motion transmissions. Performs advanced support functions and activities related to engineering and design services for manufacturing and production engineering groups. Supervising, coordinating, planning, and supporting all repair operations for their team. This includes collaborating with adjacent members of Robotics and Digital Solutions (RAD) to support quarterly goals, identify and mitigate operational risk, and plan operational timelines for System Repair. Key team collaboration include hardware engineering, robot controls, system integration, testing, software, and internal manufacturing groups.

As a member of the R&D Engineering Team, you will contribute to the development of a sophisticated robotic medical platform. Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead or support a small team of Mechanical Technicians.
  • Ensures the support of the most sophisticated engineering activities to effect high quality processes and design guidelines for dissemination throughout the division.
  • Oversees the checking of complex layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensions.
  • Performs in-depth vendor and equipment analysis for engineers to determine cost-effective and high-quality design and tooling. Presents results to management.
  • Coordinates the participation of technicians in designed experiments and capability studies.
  • Ensures the collection and archiving of research and development documentation and delivers training documentation on processes, materials, and equipment.
  • Uses sophisticated computer aided industrial design applications and trains others on their operation. Ensures alignment to all company safety policies and procedures and other safety precautions within the work area.
  • Work to ensure we design safe, robust, and reliable solutions utilizing engineering methods with good documentation processes and releasing design documentation through an ECO process.
  • Assemble and repair various robotic prototypes and subassemblies, including projects with minimal direction
  • Assist in developing design improvements and assembly process improvements & fixtures for robotic devices
  • Utilize small hand tools and/or precision devices such as microscopes.
  • Perform testing and experimentation
  • Communicate status of repair activities and make any recommendations to project team members and other functional team members
  • Support experimentation to uncover key relationships between process variables and product performance
  • Support process and equipment qualification work.
  • Support product design that meets requirements regulated by FDA, UL, CE, and other governing bodies as defined by management
  • Maintain work areas, Research & Development equipment, and all areas utilized by lab, along with other relevant individuals. Duties as required or advised as vital for achieving overall company goals
  • Develop Manufacturing Process Instructions as required
  • Share knowledge and training with other operators/assemblers to improve process and techniques
  • Maintain curiosity and a willingness to learn
  • Other related duties as may be assigned
  • Maintain corporate confidentiality at all times
  • Ability and willingness to support all phases of product development from conceptualization to production.
  • Must be capable of working independently and in cross departmental engineering teams.
  • Be a positive, collaborative team member with a good honest work ethic.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED is required
  • Associates Degree preferred
  • 2 years of experience as a Mechanical Technician or related role is required
  • Must have a proven ability to optimally and clearly communicate concepts to other individuals and teams
  • Attention to detail and ability to communicate effectively is required
  • Familiarity with manual machine tools (mill and lathe) a plus
  • Ability to solder at a prototype level is preferred
  • Understanding of fastener and torque tools is preferred
  • CAD experience a plus
  • Ability to work in a regulated environment in compliance to ISO 13485 and 21 CFR 820
